Give mum the gift of good health - Mother's Day 2022

It's time to honour the mums in your life with something special - a fun family adventure on Mother's Day or a beautiful healthy meal . But it's also an opportunity for all women to appreciate and encourage everyday healthy decisions.

A well-balanced diet and regular physical activity are critical for preventing heart disease and maintaining general health in the present and future. Norrina Bai Allen, an associate professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, stated that focusing on the big picture can be inspiring.

"Remember why you're doing it," she advised. A healthy lifestyle improves your current well-being and "extends your healthy life."
Stress can be harmful to one's health since it can lead to bad lifestyle choices, which can have an influence on heart health, according to Allen.

Physical activity is vital all year, and spending too much time inactive can be harmful to one's health. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic physical activity or 75 minutes of strong aerobic physical exercise per week, or a combination of the two, spread out over the week.
Allen suggests that Mother's Day is an excellent time to go hiking, walking, and enjoying the flowering flowers of springtime. "Everyone is becoming more active, and the entire family is participating in something together."

Finding time to exercise can be tough for women with small children, but being physically active doesn't have to involve arranging for child care or working longer hours. Allen recommends being active with the kids by going for a bike ride together or going for a brisk walk while they ride their bikes. Even gardening and dancing are OK.

Physical activity may be less difficult than making a complete dietary shift. However, the entire family can participate there as well. Saturated fats and sodium should be limited, and nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and skinless chicken and fish should be included in the family's diet.

Allen believes that new mothers, in particular, require time to unwind and decompress. However, women — and men – of all ages are affected.
"We're learning a lot more about how those things influence heart disease. You should get plenty of rest "Allen remarked. Those who don't get enough sleep are more likely to get heart disease.
Create the perfect sleeping environment free of lights and other distractions to avoid disruptions, according to Allen.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle during adolescence is linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in middle age. Here are a few more tips for moms — and everyone else – on how to stay healthy:
Even if you're a busy mother, schedule regular medical checks now and have your blood pressure, cholesterol, and other critical metrics checked by a health care specialist.
Keep track of all the numbers related to your risk of cardiovascular disease and take action.
